Back in 2017, after years of back and forth to West Sussex from my home in Cornwall I had to make a difficult decision: resign from my full-time role and relocate to West Sussex to care for my ageing parents!
My father had vascular dementia and finally to be moved into full-time residential care. Mum still needed support but up until her stroke could be left for a few hours each day.
I found myself at a crossroads. I wanted to return to work, but I also needed the flexibility to continue my caring responsibilities. Finding a role that matched my skills, was close to my ‘new’ home, and allowed for that flexibility felt like a tall order.
However, sometimes, when you have the right conversations and stay open about your needs, the right opportunity comes along. That’s exactly what happened with Adeo.
Eight years on, I’m still with the company, and grateful for the understanding and flexibility they offered me from day one.
In support of others going through something similar, I want to share a few things I’ve learned that helped me balance caring and working:
• Be open and honest about your situation
• Be clear about the flexibility you need
• Focus on the value you bring to the business
• Keep the lines of communication open
To all carers juggling multiple roles — your resilience is incredible. And to businesses like Adeo that empower carers to succeed at work and at home — thank you.💙
